taṁ mahātmā brāhmaṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā te sarve kumārās tasya samīpaṁ jagmuḥ | taṁ parivārya tiṣṭhantaḥ teṣāṁ utsāho bhagnaḥ | na kiñcit kartum icchā bhavati | manasi gurvī nirāśā samabhavat |

Seeing that great-souled brāhmaṇa, all the young princes went up to him and stood surrounding him. Their spirit had been broken; they no longer felt any desire to act. A heavy hopelessness filled their minds—showing how inner resolve collapses when confidence and purpose are lost, and how guidance from the wise becomes necessary at such a moment.

Educational Q&A

When enthusiasm and purpose collapse, action becomes impossible; the episode highlights the ethical need to seek steadiness and right counsel from the wise rather than remaining trapped in despair.

All the young princes approach a great brāhmaṇa, surround him, and stand there in a dejected state—their resolve broken and their minds filled with heavy hopelessness.
