एवं स तत्र गूढात्मा कंचित् कालमुवास ह । कुमारास्त्वथ निष्क्रम्प समेता गजसाह्दयात्,इस प्रकार द्रोणने वहाँ अपने आपको छिपाये रखकर कुछ कालतक निवास किया। तदनन्तर एक दिन कौरव-पाण्डव सभी वीर कुमार हस्तिनापुरसे बाहर निकलकर बड़ी प्रसन्नताके साथ मिलकर वहाँ गुल्ली-डंडा खेलने लगे। उस समय खेलमें लगे हुए उन कुमारोंकी वह बीटा कुएँमें गिर पड़ी
evaṁ sa tatra gūḍhātmā kañcit kālam uvāsa ha | kumārās tv atha niṣkramya sametā gajasāhvayāt |
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thus, remaining concealed in spirit, he stayed there for some time. Then the princes, having gone out together from Gajasāhvaya (Hastināpura), assembled in high spirits. In the course of their play, an incident occurred that would soon draw attention to hidden circumstances and set in motion consequences for the royal youths—an early reminder that careless sport can become the seed of grave outcomes.
वैशग्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how concealed intentions and seemingly harmless actions can shape major outcomes. It suggests ethical attentiveness: secrecy (gūḍhātmā) and careless play among the powerful can become causes for later conflict or revelation.
Droṇa remains hidden for a period. Afterwards, the royal princes go out from Hastināpura and gather together in a cheerful mood for play, setting the stage for an incident that will soon follow in the story.
