Introduction to the Āstīka Narrative

Śaunaka said: “This sacred history was spoken by Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) and was recited among the residents of the Naimiṣa forest. Formerly, at the urging of the sages, my father Lomaharṣaṇa—the Sūta—narrated this very account as it had been declared by Vyāsa. Having heard it from his mouth, I too relate it faithfully.”

The verse emphasizes the ethical importance of faithful transmission: sacred history gains authority through a reliable lineage (Vyāsa → Lomaharṣaṇa → Ugraśravas), and the narrator’s duty is to preserve and convey what was heard without distortion.
Śaunaka frames the Mahābhārata’s recitation context: in Naimiṣāraṇya, sages requested the Sūta Lomaharṣaṇa to narrate the history as spoken by Vyāsa; Ugraśravas (his son) now recounts it in the same spirit of accuracy.
