Droṇa–Drupada Saṃvāda and Droṇa’s Reception at the Kuru Court (द्रोण-द्रुपद-संवादः; कुरुनगरप्रवेशः)

यथाहमनवलद्याजड़ि पुत्रदर्शलालस: | तथा रक्ताड्गुलितलः पद्मपत्रनिभ: शुभे,साधु पुरुष इसीको प्राचीन धर्म कहते हैं। राजकन्ये! पति अपनी पत्नीसे जो बात कहे, वह धर्मके अनुकूल हो या प्रतिकूल, उसे अवश्य पूर्ण करना चाहिये--ऐसा वेदज्ञ पुरुषोंका कथन है। विशेषतः ऐसा पति, जो पुत्रकी अभिलाषा रखता हो और स्वयं संतानोत्पादनकी शक्तिसे रहित हो, जो बात कहे, वह अवश्य माननी चाहिये। निर्दोष अंगोंवाली शुभलक्षणे! मैं चूँकि पुत्रका मुँह देखनेके लिये लालायित हूँ, अतएव तुम्हारी प्रसन्नताके लिये मस्तकके समीप यह अंजलि धारण करता हूँ, जो लाल-लाल अंगुलियोंसे युक्त तथा कमलदलके समान सुशोभित है। सुन्दर केशोंवाली प्रिये! तुम मेरे आदेशसे तपस्यामें बढ़े-चढ़े हुए किसी श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणके साथ समागम करके गुणवान्‌ पुत्र उत्पन्न करो। सुश्रोणि! तुम्हारे प्रयत्नसे मैं पुत्रवानोंकी गति प्राप्त करूँ, ऐसी मेरी अभिलाषा है

Vaiśampāyana uvāca: yathāham anavalad yājaḍi putradarśalālasaḥ | tathā raktāṅgulitalaḥ padmapatranibhaḥ śubhe | sādhū puruṣa isīko prācīna dharma kahate haiṃ | rājakanye! pati apanī patnīse jo bāt kahe, vah dharmake anukūl ho yā pratikūl, use avaśya pūrṇa karanā cāhiye—aisā vedajña puruṣoṃkā kathana hai | viśeṣataḥ aisā pati, jo putrakī abhilāṣā rakhatā ho aura svayaṃ santānotpādanakī śaktise rahit ho, jo bāt kahe, vah avaśya mānanī cāhiye | nirdoṣa aṅgoṃvālī śubhalakṣaṇe! maiṃ cūँki putrakā muṃh dekhane ke liye lālāyita hūṃ, ataeva tumhārī prasannatā ke liye mastak ke samīpa yah añjali dhāraṇ karatā hūṃ, jo lāl-lāl aṅguliyoṃse yukta tathā kamaladal ke samān suśobhita hai | sundar keśoṃvālī priye! tum mere ādeś se tapasyā meṃ baṛhe-caṛhe hue kisī śreṣṭha brāhmaṇ ke sāth samāgama karke guṇavān putra utpanna karo | suśroṇi! tumhāre prayatnase maiṃ putravānoṃkī gati prāpta karūँ, aisī merī abhilāṣā hai

Vaiśampāyana said: “O auspicious princess, this is what the good call the ancient dharma: whatever a husband tells his wife—whether it seems in accord with dharma or contrary to it—should be carried out; so declare those who know the Veda. Especially, when a husband longs for a son yet lacks the power to beget children, his request must be accepted. Blameless-limbed, fair-marked lady, since I am eager to see the face of a son, I raise this lotus-petal-like supplication with reddened fingertips near my head, seeking your consent. Beloved with lovely hair, at my command approach a foremost Brahmin, eminent in austerity, and beget a virtuous son. O fair-hipped one, it is my desire that through your effort I may attain the destiny of those who have sons.”
