अनुक्रमणिकाध्यायः (Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope

सुखासीनानभ्यगच्छद्‌ ब्रह्मर्षीन्‌ संशितव्रतान्‌ | विनयावनतो भूत्वा कदाचित्‌ सूतनन्दन:,एक समयकी बात है, नैमिषारण्यमें: कुलपति* महर्षि शौनकके बारह वर्षोतक चालू रहनेवाले सत्रमें* जब उत्तम एवं कठोर ब्रह्मचर्यादि व्रतोंका पालन करनेवाले ब्रह्मर्षिगण अवकाशके समय सुखपूर्वक बैठे थे, सूतकुलको आनन्दित करनेवाले लोमहर्षणपुत्र उमग्रश्रवा सौति स्वयं कौतूहलवश उन ब्रह्मर्षियोंक समीप बड़े विनीतभावसे आये। वे पुराणोंके विद्वान और कथावाचक थे

sukhāsīnān abhyagacchad brahmarṣīn saṃśitavratān | vinayāvanato bhūtvā kadācit sūtanandanaḥ ||

Once, when the Brahmin seers—disciplined by well-honed vows—were seated at ease during a pause in their rites, the son of the Sūta lineage approached them. Bowing with humility and proper decorum, he came near, ready to speak in a manner befitting learned ascetics and the sacred setting.
