Praṇava-Māhātmya and the Twofold Mantra (Sūkṣma–Sthūla) in Śaiva Sādhanā
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: By prescribing a fixed count (12,000), the text treats mantra-japa as a ‘tapas’ equivalent to pilgrimage merit, emphasizing inner tīrtha (śuddha-deśa + śuddha-manas) over mere geography.
Mantra: (implied)
Type: panchakshara
It teaches that Pañcākṣara-japa becomes spiritually potent when joined with inner purity and disciplined conduct, aligning the devotee (paśu) toward Shiva (Pati) through bhakti and mantra-sādhana.
The verse supports Saguna Shiva worship by prescribing a concrete practice—repetition of Shiva’s Pañcākṣara mantra—typically performed before or alongside Liṅga-pūjā in a clean sacred space.
A disciplined japa practice: sit in a clean, pleasant place with a purified mind and chant the Pañcākṣara mantra twelve thousand times (often counted with a mālā), maintaining personal and environmental purity.
