Yamaraja
Tattva Level: pasha
The verse frames naraka as a dharmic, orderly process where karmic impurity is burned away in stages, preparing the bound soul (paśu) for eventual upliftment under the higher sovereignty of Pati (Śiva).
By contrasting Yama’s corrective justice with Śiva’s grace, the text implies that devotion to Saguna Śiva (Linga worship, mantra, and dharma) prevents heavier karmic descent and accelerates purification through Śiva’s anugraha (saving grace).
The practical takeaway is strict niyama (ethical discipline) alongside Śiva-upāsanā—especially japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—as a means to purify karma without undergoing harsh naraka-like correction.
