(Mahāpātaka-varṇanam) — “Description of Great Sins and Their Consequences”
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
It teaches that Shaiva realization is not mere learning: true Śiva-jñāna must be approached with devotion, right conduct (śivācāra), and reverence for Śiva’s devotees—otherwise study becomes spiritually fruitless and even harmful.
Linga/Saguna worship is grounded in bhakti and āchāra. The verse implies that honoring Śiva outwardly (through worship and respect for devotees) must accompany engaging with Śiva’s teachings; practice and reverence validate scriptural study.
Before studying or copying Shaiva texts, perform respectful worship—such as offering salutations to Śiva, remembering the guru-paramparā, and reciting the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with humility; maintain non-hatred and service toward Śiva-bhaktas.
