The Glory of the Purāṇa-Knower and the Fruits of Study, Teaching, and Giving
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: Śravaṇa/pāṭha of Purāṇic Śiva-kathā is presented as a direct upāya for mokṣa through bhakti and Śiva’s anugraha (grace), even without elaborate ritual capacity.
It declares śravaṇa (devout listening) and pāṭha (devout reading) of sacred Purāṇic teaching as liberating when done with bhakti, emphasizing grace-oriented liberation aligned with Shaiva Siddhanta.
Purāṇic recitation typically praises Saguna Shiva—His forms, līlās, and the Linga’s sanctity—so devoted hearing/reading becomes a mode of worship that turns the mind toward Shiva and prepares it for liberation.
Regular śravaṇa or pāṭha of the Shiva Purana with devotion—especially in vrata times like Mahāśivarātri—serves as a simple sādhana; it may be paired with mantra-japa (e.g., Om Namaḥ Śivāya) though this verse specifically highlights hearing/reading.
