The Esoteric Teaching of Vāmadeva’s Doctrine
Sages of Naimisharanya (addressing Suta Goswami)
Tattva Level: pashu
Role: teaching
It highlights śraddhā (faith) and paramādara (deep reverence) as the proper inner posture for receiving Shaiva teaching; such attentive listening purifies the bound soul (paśu) and turns it toward Pati (Shiva), the compassionate liberator.
The verse models bhakti through śravaṇa (devotional hearing): by respectfully requesting the sacred narration, devotees prepare the mind to approach Saguna Shiva—often worshiped as the Linga—with humility and receptivity, which is foundational to effective pūjā and katha-śravaṇa.
It implies śiva-kathā-śravaṇa: listening with faith and respect; practically, one may begin with mental salutation to Shiva, then hear/recite the text, and conclude with japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) in a calm, attentive state.
