Dahulu, karena amarah, ia menerjang dan menantangmu bertempur; namun ketika ia melompat keluar, engkau memukulnya hingga tersingkir, dan dalam keadaan terhajar ia lari ke segala arah.
'Earlier, he (Sugriva) came and challenged you to a duel. You struck him in anger, and defeated, he fled, running in all directions. Now his challenge rouses my suspicion.
Anger-driven violence leads to recurring cycles of humiliation and retaliation; dharma calls for restraint and fair resolution rather than impulsive dominance.
Vāli recalls the previous duel where Sugrīva challenged him, was defeated, and fled—context for Vāli’s present suspicion.
The verse foregrounds the vice of anger (krodha) as a motivator, warning how it shapes conflict and memory.
