Why the Gods Won

Other kinsmen/relatives (bāndhavāḥ) addressing a naya-paṇḍita
Concept: Merit (puṇya) is recognized by its god-pleasing quality; righteous action is validated not merely by power but by alignment with deva-priya (what uplifts cosmic order).
Application: Before acting, test intentions: does this deed increase clarity, generosity, and harmony, or merely advantage? Seek counsel from wise, dharma-grounded peers.

The verse says the relatives spoke to “him,” calling him naya-paṇḍita—someone learned in right conduct and prudent judgment—indicating they are appealing to his ethical discernment.
Bali is cited as the source of a statement about a certain puṇya (meritorious act), which the relatives affirm as devatānāṃ priya-kāram—pleasing to the gods.
It frames dharmic action as that which generates puṇya and aligns with what is pleasing to the gods, and it highlights communal endorsement of virtue by respected elders/kinsmen.
