It warns that failing to recognize sanctity in a tapasvī (ascetic) and committing violence against him becomes a grave dharmic offense, bringing severe karmic repercussions.
Bhakti is inseparable from reverence and non-violence: honoring holy persons and avoiding aparādha (offense) is presented as a foundational discipline that protects and supports devotional life.
The verse functions as a dharma-guardrail within the Vedāṅga-oriented section: correct discernment (viveka) and proper conduct toward renunciants is implied as necessary for any ritual, study, or technical practice to bear fruit.
