Adhyaya 23 — Ashvatara’s Vow for Madalasa and the Bestowal of Musical Science by Sarasvati
किंत्वत्र मन्ये कर्तव्यस्त्यागो भागस्य योषितः ।
स चापि नोपकाराय तन्वङ्ग्याः किन्तु सर्वथा ॥
kintv atra manye kartavyas tyāgo bhāgasya yoṣitaḥ / sa cāpi nopakārāya tanvaṅgyāḥ kintu sarvathā
Namun di sini kupikir, demi perempuan itu aku sepatutnya melepaskan bagianku; tetapi bahkan itu pun bukan untuk kebaikan si ramping-anggota, melainkan sepenuhnya untuk tujuan lain.

The speaker distinguishes between an act that truly benefits the deceased and an act performed to satisfy honor, reciprocity, or inner compulsion. Dharma evaluation depends on intention and consequence, not merely dramatic sacrifice.

‘Bhāga’ can symbolize one’s allotted karmic role; ‘tyāga’ here hints at relinquishing egoic claim to outcomes—yet the verse warns that some renunciations are still ego-driven, not truly liberative.
