Dharma-śaṅkā-nivāraṇa: Yudhiṣṭhira’s Response on Karma-Phala and Trust in Dharma

Educational Q&A

A person should not abandon dharma merely because the expected fruit is not seen; instead, one should suspect an unseen fault or obstacle and apply prāyaścitta. Completing one’s duty properly makes one ethically ‘clear’ (anṛṇya), even if results are uncertain.

Yudhiṣṭhira addresses a kingly interlocutor (“rājendra”), reflecting on why outcomes sometimes fail to appear even after action. He frames the response in dharmic terms: seek the cause, perform expiation if needed, and recognize that proper performance itself removes culpability.
