शकुनिस्तन्तुबद्धो वा नियतो5यमनीश्वर: । ईश्वरस्य वशे तिषछेन्नान्येषां नात्मन: प्रभु:,जीव स्वतन्त्र नहीं है, वह डोरेमें बँधे हुए पक्षीकी भाँति कर्मके बन्धनमें बँधा होनेसे परतन्त्र है। वह ईश्वरके ही वशमें होता है। उसका न दूसरोंपर वश चलता है, न अपने ऊपर

śakunisti tantubaddho vā niyato ’yam anīśvaraḥ | īśvarasya vaśe tiṣṭhen nānyeṣāṃ nātmanaḥ prabhuḥ ||

Yudhiṣṭhira berkata: “Seperti burung yang terikat tali, makhluk ini terbelenggu oleh ikatan karma—terkendali dan tanpa kuasa merdeka. Ia berdiri hanya di bawah kehendak Īśvara; ia tak berkuasa atas orang lain, bahkan atas dirinya sendiri.”
