Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharma through steadfastness: a person should hold firmly to a righteous resolve (saṅkalpa) and honor a vow (samaya), practicing self-restraint until the intended duty is fulfilled.

In Mārkaṇḍeya’s narration of Sāvitrī’s story, Sāvitrī declares her determination to fast and not eat until sunset, linking her meal to the completion of her purpose and emphasizing the seriousness of her pledged vow.
