Indrajit’s Binding, Restoration by Viśalyā, and Counsel Restraining Rāvaṇa (Āraṇyaka Parva 273)
एवमुक्तस्तु स्रीड तूष्णी किंचिदवाड्मुख:,राजन! युधिष्ठिरके ऐसा कहनेपर जयद्रथ बहुत लज्जित हुआ और नीचा मुँह किये वहाँसे चुपचाप चला गया। जनमेजय! वह पराजित होनेके महान् दुःखसे पीड़ित था; अतः वहाँसे घर न जाकर गंगाद्वार (हरिद्वार)-को चल दिया। वहाँ पहुँचकर उसने तीन नेत्रोंवाले भगवान् उमापतिकी शरण ले बड़ी भारी तपस्या की। इससे भगवान् शंकर प्रसन्न हो गये। त्रिनेत्रधारी महादेवने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक स्वयं दर्शन देकर उसकी पूजा ग्रहण की
evam uktaḥ tu śrīḍaḥ tūṣṇīṃ kiñcid avāṅmukhaḥ | rājan yudhiṣṭhireṇaivaṃ ukte jayadrathaḥ mahān lajjitaḥ san avāṅmukhaḥ tūṣṇīṃ tatraiva tyaktvā jagāma | janamejaya sa parājayasya mahāduḥkhena pīḍitaḥ san gṛhaṃ na jagāma, api tu gaṅgādvāraṃ (haridvāram) yayau | tatra gatvā sa trinetraṃ bhagavantaṃ umāpatiṃ śaraṇaṃ jagāma, mahātapasā ca taṃ toṣayāmāsa | tataḥ śaṅkaraḥ prasannaḥ abhavat | trinetraḥ mahādevaḥ prasannatayā svayaṃ darśanaṃ dattvā tasya pūjāṃ jagrāha |
Mendengar Yudhiṣṭhira berkata demikian, Jayadratha merasa malu; ia terdiam, menundukkan wajah, lalu pergi diam-diam dari tempat itu. Wahai Raja Janamejaya, tersiksa oleh duka besar karena kekalahan, ia tidak pulang ke rumah; ia menuju Gaṅgādvāra (Haridwar). Setibanya di sana, ia berlindung pada Sang Tiga-Mata, Umāpati Virūpākṣa, dan menjalani tapa yang amat berat. Karena itu Śaṅkara berkenan; Mahādeva yang bermata tiga menampakkan diri dan menerima pemujaannya.
भीमसेन उवाच
Defeat and public reproach can become a turning point: shame and suffering, when met with humility and disciplined effort, may be redirected into spiritual striving. The passage also highlights the ethic that divine favor is approached through refuge (śaraṇa) and sustained tapas, not through pride.
After being addressed by Yudhiṣṭhira, Jayadratha leaves in silence, humiliated. Overwhelmed by the pain of defeat, he goes to Gaṅgādvāra (Haridwar) rather than home, performs severe austerities, and Śiva—pleased—appears and accepts his worship.
