जिस समय वे सब लोग मोहग्रस्त हो रहे थे, उसी समय पर्वतों और मेघमालाओंके समान दैत्योंकी विशाल एवं भयंकर सेना दिखायी दी। वह नाना प्रकारके अस्त्र-शस्त्रोंसे सुसज्जित थी। उसके सैनिकोंकी संख्या गिनी नहीं जा सकती थी। वह भयंकर वाहिनी अनेक प्रकारकी बोली बोलती हुई भीषण गर्जना कर रही थी ।। अभ्यद्रवद्‌ रणे देवान्‌ भगवन्तं च शड्करम्‌ | तैर्विसृष्टान्यनीकेषु बाणजालान्यनेकश:,उसने रणभूमिमें आकर देवताओं तथा भगवान्‌ शंकरपर धावा बोल दिया। दैत्योंने देवताओंके सैनिकोंपर कई बार बाण-वर्षा की

markaṇḍeya uvāca | yadā te sarve mohagrastā babhūvuḥ, tadā parvata-megha-mālā-sadṛśī dānavānāṃ viśālā bhayānakā ca senā dṛśyate sma | sā nānā-vidhair astra-śastraiḥ susajjitā āsīt | tasyāḥ saṅkhyā gaṇayituṃ na śakyate sma | sā bhīṣaṇā vāhinī nānā-bhāṣāḥ pravadantī ghorāṃ garjanāṃ cakāra || abhyadravad raṇe devān bhagavantaṃ ca śaṅkaram | tair visṛṣṭāny anīkeṣu bāṇa-jālāny anekaśaḥ ||
