Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve
Gandharva Encounter
“देव! तुम भगवान् शंकरके समान ही युद्धमें शत्रुओंके लिये अजेय हो। यह तुम्हारा प्रथम पराक्रम सर्वत्र विख्यात होगा। तुम्हारी अक्षय कीर्ति तीनों लोकोंमें फैल जायगी। महाबाहो! सब देवता तुम्हारे वशमें रहेंगे” ।। एवमुक्त्वा महासेनं निवृत्त: सह दैवतै: । अनुज्ञातो भगवता त्र्यम्बकेण शचीपति:
deva! tvaṃ bhagavān śaṅkarasya samāna eva yuddhe śatrūṇāṃ prati ajeyo bhaviṣyasi | eṣa tava prathamaḥ parākramaḥ sarvatra vikhyātaḥ bhaviṣyati | tava akṣayā kīrtiḥ trilokeṣu prasariṣyati | mahābāho! sarve devāḥ tava vaśe bhaviṣyanti || evam uktvā mahāsenaṃ nivṛttaḥ saha daivataiḥ | anujñāto bhagavatā tryambakeṇa śacīpatiḥ ||
Mārkaṇḍeya berkata: “Wahai yang ilahi! Dalam pertempuran engkau akan tak terkalahkan bagi musuh-musuhmu, laksana Śaṅkara yang mulia sendiri. Inilah mahaperkasa pertamamu yang akan termasyhur di mana-mana. Kemasyhuranmu yang abadi akan menjalar ke tiga dunia. Wahai yang berlengan perkasa! Semua dewa pun akan berada di bawah kuasamu.” Setelah berkata demikian, Indra—suami Śacī—bersama para dewa, setelah memperoleh izin dari Tryambaka yang mulia (Śiva), menarik diri dari bala tentara besar itu.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
Heroic power and lasting fame are portrayed as arising under divine auspices: true invincibility and sovereignty are not merely personal achievements but are affirmed through alignment with the divine order and the blessing (anujñā) of Śiva.
Mārkaṇḍeya delivers a prophetic praise/blessing, comparing the addressed hero’s invincibility to Śiva’s and predicting imperishable renown across the three worlds; then Indra, accompanied by the gods, withdraws after receiving Śiva’s permission.
