कौशिक ब्राह्मण और माता-पिताके भक्त धर्मव्याध (सुखमावां वसावो<त्र देवलोकगताविव) न तेडन्यद्‌ दैवतं किंचिद्‌ दैवतेष्वपि वर्तते । प्रयतत्वाद्‌ द्विजातीनां दमेनासि समन्वित:,हम इस घरमें इस प्रकार सुखसे रहते हैं मानो देवलोकमें पहुँच गये हों। देवताओंमें भी तुम्हारे लिये हम दोनोंके सिवा और कोई देवता नहीं है। तुम हमें ही देवता मानते हो। अपने मनको पवित्र एवं संयममें रखनेके कारण तुम द्विजोचित शम-दमसे सम्पन्न हो

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | (kauśikaṃ prati) brāhmaṇaḥ mātā-pitṛ-bhaktaś ca dharmavyādhaḥ—sukham āvāṃ vasāvo ’tra devaloka-gatāv iva | na te ’nyad daivataṃ kiñcid daivateṣv api vartate | prayatatvād dvijātīnāṃ damenāsi samanvitaḥ |

Mārkaṇḍeya berkata: “Wahai Kaushika, kami berdua tinggal di rumah ini dengan kenyamanan seakan telah mencapai alam para dewa. Bagimu, bahkan di antara para dewa pun tiada sesembahan selain kami berdua; engkau memandang kami sajalah sebagai ilahi. Karena engkau menjaga diri tetap suci dan terkendali, engkau dianugerahi ketenangan dan pengendalian diri yang layak bagi kaum dwija.”
