मार्कण्डेय उवाच

ब्राह्मण (the brāhmaṇa speaker within the story)
व्याध (the hunter/meat-seller)

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds ethical scrutiny of one’s livelihood: the brāhmaṇa judges the hunter’s meat-selling as ‘not befitting’ and expresses moral anguish, setting up a dharma-discussion on whether social expectations or inner righteousness should define a person’s worth.

After sitting down, the brāhmaṇa speaks to the hunter/meat-seller, criticizing his occupation as unsuitable and confessing that he feels intense sorrow because of the hunter’s ‘dreadful’ work.
