Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds dharma during adversity: as the righteous enter exile, the presence of Brahmins who live by alms highlights obligations of support, respect, and proper conduct toward dependents and guests—ethical duties that persist even when royal power is lost.

At daybreak, the Pāṇḍavas are ready to set out for the forest; Brahmins who subsist on alms stand before them, indicating they will accompany the brothers into exile and setting up later discussions on wealth, its faults, and the importance of honoring guests.
