एतत् संयमनं पुण्यमतीवाद्धुतदर्शनम् । प्रेतराजस्य भवनमृद्धया परमया युतम्,'प्रेतताजका यह निवासस्थान अत्यन्त समृद्धिशाली परम पवित्र तथा देखनेमें अद्भुत है। राजन! इसका नाम संयमन (या संयमनीपुरी) है
etat saṁyamanaṁ puṇyam atīvādbhuta-darśanam | preta-rājasya bhavanaṁ ṛddhyā paramayā yutam ||
Kota suci bernama Saṁyamana ini sungguh menakjubkan untuk dipandang. Inilah kediaman Penguasa para arwah (Yama), dipenuhi kemakmuran dan kemilau yang tertinggi.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames Yama’s realm as both ‘puṇya’ (holy) and ‘saṁyamana’ (restraint), implying that the moral order governing life and death is not chaotic but structured, awe-inspiring, and aligned with dharma; the afterlife is portrayed as a domain of just governance and solemn sanctity.
Vaiśampāyana describes the splendid, wondrous city called Saṁyamana—identified as the residence of Yama, the Lord of the departed—emphasizing its holiness and extraordinary prosperity as part of the broader depiction of realms encountered in the narrative.
