प्रियाप्रिये सुखदु:खे च राजन्‌ निन्दाप्रशंसे च भजन्त एव । परस्त्वेनं गर्हयते5पराधे प्रशंसते साधुवृत्तं तमेव,राजन्‌! इस जगतमें प्रिय-अप्रिय, सुख-दुःख, निन्दा-प्रशंसा--ये मनुष्यको प्राप्त होते ही रहते हैं। इसीलिये लोग अपराध करनेपर अपराधीकी निन्दा करते हैं और जिसका बर्ताव उत्तम होता है, उस साधु पुरुषकी ही प्रशंसा करते हैं

sañjaya uvāca |

priyāpriye sukhaduḥkhe ca rājan nindāpraśaṃse ca bhajanta eva |

paras tv enaṃ garhayate 'parādhe praśaṃsate sādhuvṛttaṃ tam eva, rājan ||

Sañjaya berkata: “Wahai Raja, di dunia ini orang pasti menjumpai yang disukai dan yang tidak, suka dan duka, cela dan puji. Karena itu, bila seseorang berbuat salah, orang lain mencela si pelaku; dan orang yang laku lakunya mulia itulah yang dipuji sebagai orang baik, wahai Raja.”
