Śuka–Janaka Saṃvāda: Āśrama-krama, Jñāna-vijñāna, and the Marks of Liberation (शुक-जनक संवादः)

तमसो लक्षणानीह भक्षणाद्यभिरोचनम्‌ | भोजनानामपर्याप्तिस्तथा पेयेष्वतृप्तता

tamaso lakṣaṇānīha bhakṣaṇādy-abhirocanam | bhojanānām aparyāptis tathā peyeṣv atṛptatā ||

Yājñavalkya bersabda: Inilah tanda-tanda tamas di dunia ini—kegemaran pada makan dan sejenisnya; perasaan bahwa makanan tak pernah cukup; serta ketidakmampuan merasa puas bahkan oleh minuman. Dalam watak tamas demikian, delusi dan ‘tanpa cahaya’ (ketidaktahuan) bertambah; ia jatuh ke ‘tāmisra’ (kegelapan berupa amarah) dan tenggelam ke ‘andhatāmisra’ (kegelapan yang berujung maut). Tanda-tandanya: enggan pada makanan yang menyehatkan, tak pernah puas betapapun banyak yang diperoleh, dahaga tak terpadamkan oleh minuman, menyukai pakaian berbau busuk, kebiasaan yang tak patut, memakai ranjang dan tempat duduk yang kotor, tidur di siang hari, kecanduan bertengkar dan lalai, terpikat—karena kebodohan—pada tari, nyanyian, dan aneka alat musik, serta memusuhi beragam jalan dharma.
