Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament and Kṛṣṇa’s Rudra-Cosmogony Explanation (सौप्तिक पर्व, अध्याय १७)

स भक्ष्यमाणस्त्राणार्थी पितामहमुपाद्रवत्‌ । आशभ्यो मां भगवांस्त्रातु वृत्तिरासां विधीयताम्‌,जब प्रजा प्रजापतिको अपना आहार बनानेके लिये उद्यत हुई, तब वे आत्मरक्षाके लिये बड़े वेगसे भागकर पितामह ब्रह्माजीकी सेवामें उपस्थित हुए और बोले--'भगवन्‌! आप मुझे इन प्रजाओंसे बचाइये और इनके लिये कोई जीविका-वृत्ति नियत कर दीजिये” इति श्रीमहाभारते सौप्तिकपर्वणि ऐषीकपर्वणि युधिष्ठिरकृष्णसंवादे सप्तदशो<ड्ध्याय:

sa bhakṣyamāṇas trāṇārthī pitāmaham upādravat | āśabhyo māṃ bhagavāṃs trātu vṛttir āsāṃ vidhīyatām ||

Ketika makhluk-makhluk itu hendak menjadikan Prajāpati sebagai santapan, ia—demi keselamatan—segera berlari menghadap Sang Kakek Agung, Brahmā, dan memohon: “Wahai Bhagavān, lindungilah aku dari mereka, dan tetapkan bagi mereka suatu cara penghidupan.”

Educational Q&A

When beings are driven solely by hunger, life collapses into predation; dharma requires an ordered livelihood (vṛtti) so that survival is regulated and the weak are protected. The verse presents governance—here attributed to Brahmā—as the setting of norms that prevent creation from consuming itself.

A being, about to be devoured by newly arisen creatures, flees to Brahmā for refuge. He asks Brahmā both to save him immediately and to establish a sustainable means of subsistence for those creatures so that they need not prey upon him.
