Mahabharata 7.198.9Drona Parva, Adhyaya 198, Shloka 9

Educational Q&A

In the fog of war, a righteous leader does not act on panic alone: he observes (seeing the rout), verifies (hearing the renewed uproar), and then consults the most capable agent (Arjuna) before deciding. The verse highlights disciplined judgment and responsibility amid collective fear.

Sanjaya reports to Dhritarashtra that Yudhishthira first notices the Kaurava forces running. Soon after, he hears a fresh, terrifying battlefield roar and immediately addresses Arjuna—setting up the next exchange about what the sound signifies and what should be done.
