द्रोणपर्व — अध्याय १६२: प्रातःसंध्यायां युद्धप्रवृत्तिः तथा रजोमेघे संमूढता
दृष्टवा विनिहतान् संख्ये पज्चालान् सोमकै: सह । “सोमकोंसहित पांचालोंको युद्धमें मारा गया देख आज धर्मपुत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरके मनमें बड़ा निर्वेद (खेद एवं वैराग्य) होगा
dṛṣṭvā vinihatān saṅkhye pāñcālān somakaiḥ saha |
Sañjaya berkata: Melihat para Pāñcāla bersama kaum Somaka telah gugur di medan laga, Raja Yudhiṣṭhira—putra Dharma—hari ini akan dikuasai keputusasaan yang dalam dan rasa lepas dari dunia, terguncang oleh beban dharma atas kehancuran itu.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical aftermath of violence: even when war is pursued as duty, the sight of mass death can awaken profound remorse and detachment, especially in a ruler committed to dharma like Yudhiṣṭhira.
Sañjaya reports the battlefield outcome—Pāñcāla and Somaka forces have been slain—and anticipates Yudhiṣṭhira’s inner reaction: intense sorrow and a turning away from the very enterprise of war.
