Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethic of reciprocal obligation in royal and military life: when a king grants high office, the recipient expresses readiness to repay through service. It also underscores role-dharma—accepting responsibility and offering one’s capacity for the ruler’s aims, for good or ill.

After Bhīṣma’s fall and the end of his command, the king appoints a new commander. The speaker addresses the king, acknowledging Bhīṣma’s preeminence and declaring willingness to fulfill the king’s desire as a ‘return’ for being made commander-in-chief.
