The verse teaches that Kali-yuga is characterized by the dominance of inner vices—envy, pride, anger, deceit, fault-finding, attachment, and greed—implying that ethical vigilance and self-restraint are especially necessary when such tendencies become socially pervasive.
Sañjaya is describing to the listener (addressed as Bhārata) the qualities prevalent among beings in the Kali age, as part of a broader discourse on time-cycles and the moral conditions of different yugas.
