Sāma (Sāntva) and Dāna: The Brāhmaṇa’s Conciliatory Release from a Rākṣasa
भवतो भावितात्मत्वाल्लाभो<यं सुमहान् मम । भूयो बुद्ध्यानुपश्यामि सुसमृद्धतपा इव
bhavato bhāvitātmatvāl lābho ’yaṃ sumahān mama | bhūyo buddhyānupaśyāmi susamṛddhatapā iva ||
Maitreya berkata: “Karena batinmu telah terolah dengan sangat baik, ini menjadi keuntungan yang amat besar bagiku. Sekali lagi, dengan pengertian yang lebih jernih, aku memandangmu bagaikan seorang yang tapa dan disiplin rohaninya telah berlimpah dan sempurna.”
मैत्रेय उवाच
Inner cultivation (bhāvitātmatva) and mature discipline (tapas) make a person truly worthy of reverence; such refinement benefits others by granting them clarity, confidence, and moral-spiritual insight.
Maitreya addresses the person before him with respect, saying that the encounter has been a great benefit to him; he recognizes, with renewed discernment, the other’s accomplished austerity and inner refinement.
