Lord Vishnu (addressing Garuda, quoting/using Arjuna-style address as a conventional vocative)

Concept: Deity-identification through a set of constituent factors; Vāyu’s special distinguishing role among them.

Vedantic Theme: Adhyāropa-apavāda style classification: using functional attributions to point toward an underlying order (niyati/ṛta) and hierarchy of powers.

Application: Use discriminative inquiry (viveka) when studying mantra/devatā-tattva; recognize prāṇa/Vāyu as pivotal in practice (breath, steadiness, recitation support).

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Related Themes: Garuda Purana (general): discussions of devatā-tattva and cosmological correspondences in dialogue sections; Garuda Purana: passages where prāṇa/Vāyu is praised as sustaining life and ritual efficacy (theme-level parallel)

FAQs

The verse highlights a distinct, special function of Vāyu—often understood as the life-breath/prāṇa principle—suggesting that among the enumerated factors, the “fourth” has a unique dependence on Vāyu.

By emphasizing Vāyu’s special role, the verse aligns with Purāṇic subtle-body teaching where prāṇa (governed by Vāyu) is crucial for sustaining and moving the subtle organism, especially in post-death descriptions.

Cultivate disciplined breath and vitality through sāttvika living, restraint, and mindful practices (e.g., prāṇāyāma under guidance), recognizing life-breath as central to steadiness of mind and dharmic conduct.
