Nābhāga’s Inheritance, Śiva’s Verdict, and the Rise of Ambarīṣa—Prelude to Durvāsā’s Offense
भ्रातरोऽभाङ्क्त किं मह्यं भजाम पितरं तव । त्वां ममार्यास्तताभाङ्क्षुर्मा पुत्रक तदादृथा: ॥ २ ॥
bhrātaro ’bhāṅkta kiṁ mahyaṁ bhajāma pitaraṁ tava tvāṁ mamāryās tatābhāṅkṣur mā putraka tad ādṛthāḥ
Nābhāga bertanya, “Wahai saudara-saudaraku, bagian apa yang kalian berikan kepadaku dari harta ayah?” Kakak-kakaknya menjawab, “Bagianmu adalah ayah.” Ketika Nābhāga mendatangi ayahnya dan berkata, “Ayah, kakak-kakak telah memberikan Ayah sebagai bagianku,” sang ayah menjawab, “Anakku, jangan bersandar pada kata-kata tipu mereka; aku bukan milikmu.”
This verse models steadiness and dharma: even when rejected by brothers, one should not become bitter, but continue honoring rightful duties and elders’ intentions.
She reassures him that the situation is not a personal failure; elders had sanctioned and desired the match/decision, so he should remain composed and act righteously.
When facing family conflict, avoid resentment, stay respectful in duty, and keep emotional balance—respond with integrity rather than retaliation.
