Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi Meets Lord Śiva: Devotee as Living Tīrtha and the Lord’s Māyā
वरमेकं वृणेऽथापि पूर्णात् कामाभिवर्षणात् । भगवत्यच्युतां भक्तिं तत्परेषु तथा त्वयि ॥ ३४ ॥
varam ekaṁ vṛṇe ’thāpi pūrṇāt kāmābhivarṣaṇāt bhagavaty acyutāṁ bhaktiṁ tat-pareṣu tathā tvayi
Namun, Engkau sempurna dan mampu menghujankan pemenuhan segala keinginan; aku memohon satu anugerah saja: bhakti yang tak tergoyahkan kepada Bhagavan, serta bhakti kepada para bhakta-Nya yang sepenuhnya berserah, terutama kepadamu.
The words tat-pareṣu tathā tvayi clearly indicate that Lord Śiva is a devotee of the Supreme Lord, not the Supreme Lord Himself. Because the representative of God is offered the same protocol as God Himself, Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi addressed Lord Śiva as “lord” in previous verses. But now it is clearly revealed that, as stated throughout Vedic literature, Lord Śiva is an eternal servant of God and not God Himself.
This verse shows that the highest boon is not the fulfillment of desires, but steady devotion (acyutā bhakti) to Bhagavān.
Though the giver could grant any worldly desire, Mārkaṇḍeya values the supreme goal—unfailing devotion to the Lord—over temporary attainments.
Seek saintly association, serve sincere devotees, learn from them, and cultivate respect and support for those dedicated to God.
