Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Alamkara","secondary_vidya":"Natya","practical_application":"Use the six guṇa-bhedas as a checklist for crafting and evaluating poetry, dialogue, and dramatic speech according to audience, character, and occasion.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"List","entry_title":"Ṣaḍ-Guṇa-bhedāḥ: Mādhurya to Sāmayikatva","lookup_keywords":["mādhurya","sambidhāna","komalatā","udāratā","prauḍhi","sāmayikatva"],"quick_summary":"Six principal varieties of poetic excellence are enumerated: sweetness, well-structured expression, tenderness, nobility, mature grandeur, and timeliness. Apply them to tune diction, syntax, tone, and contextual appropriateness."}

Concept: Excellence in expression is multi-dimensional and classifiable; poetic success depends on selecting the right guṇa for the communicative aim and time.

Application: Before finalizing a poem/speech, test: (1) mādhurya—pleasant flow; (2) sambidhāna—coherent construction; (3) komalatā—gentle phrasing; (4) udāratā—elevated intent; (5) prauḍhi—weight and maturity; (6) sāmayikatva—fit to occasion.

FAQs

It imparts sāhitya-vidyā (poetics): six key kāvya-guṇas—mādhurya, sambidhāna, komalatva, udāratā, prauḍhi, and sāmayikatva—used to evaluate and craft effective Sanskrit composition.

By systematizing literary theory inside a Purāṇa, it shows the Agni Purana’s encyclopedic scope—moving beyond ritual and mythology to codify technical disciplines like Sanskrit poetics, style, and composition standards.

Refined, appropriate speech and composition are treated as dhārmic disciplines: cultivating timely, noble, and gentle expression supports sattvic conduct, reduces harm through harsh speech, and makes sacred narration and teaching more effective.
