Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Alamkara","secondary_vidya":"Natya","practical_application":"Design a narrative ‘seed’—a small initial hint (problem, vow, secret, desire) that can branch into multiple episodes and culminate in a clear payoff.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Bīja (Poetic Seed)","lookup_keywords":["bīja","alpamātra","prasarpati","phalāvasāna","plot seed"],"quick_summary":"A bīja is a minimally stated element that proliferates through the work and ripens into the final result; it is the generator of plot and meaning."}

Alamkara Type: Rūpaka (implicit conceptual metaphor of seed→fruit)

Concept: Small causes can unfold into large effects when properly sustained toward a defined end (phala).

Application: When composing, state the bīja early (even subtly), revisit it through complications, and ensure the ending explicitly ‘fruits’ it.

Khanda Section: Sahitya-shastra (Kavya/Chandas/Alankara terminology)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A tiny seed placed in the first panel of a storyboard grows into a branching vine across panels, ending in a ripe fruit at the finale.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, five to seven narrative panels with a seed motif recurring and expanding into vines, culminating in a fruit at the last panel, strong contours and earthy palette.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, central seed-and-fruit emblem with gold leaf, surrounding medallions showing branching episodes, ornate borders.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore style, instructional storyboard with recurring seed icon, neat paneling, soft colors, emphasis on clarity and sequence.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, album-page layout with marginal vine motif growing from a seed to fruit across the border, fine botanical detail."}

FAQs

It defines the kavya-śāstra/drama-śāstra technical term bīja: a small initial hint or cause that later expands through the work and ripens into the final outcome (phala).

Beyond ritual and theology, the Agni Purana also preserves systematic definitions from Sanskrit literary theory—showing it functions as a multi-disciplinary compendium, including poetics and dramaturgy.

While primarily technical, it supports dharmic transmission by teaching how meaningful narratives are structured—so instruction (upadeśa) and moral consequence (phala) can be communicated effectively through literature.
