इत्य् आग्नेये महापुराणे मन्त्रपरिभाषा नाम द्विनवत्यधिकद्विशततमो ऽध्यायः अथ त्रिनवत्यधिकद्विशततमो ऽध्यायः नागलक्षणानि अग्निरुचाच नागादयो ऽथ भावादिदशस्थानानि कर्म च सूतकं दष्टचेष्टेति सप्तलक्षणमुच्यते

ity āgneye mahāpurāṇe mantraparibhāṣā nāma dvinavatyadhikadviśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ atha trinavatyadhikadviśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ nāgalakṣaṇāni agnirucāca nāgādayo 'tha bhāvādidaśasthānāni karma ca sūtakaṃ daṣṭaceṣṭeti saptalakṣaṇamucyate

Demikianlah dalam Agni Mahāpurāṇa berakhir bab ke-293 yang berjudul “Mantra-paribhāṣā” (definisi dan istilah teknis mantra). Kini dimulai bab ke-294: “Nāga-lakṣaṇāni” (tanda-tanda mengenai ular). Agni bersabda: Tentang ular dan sejenisnya, sepuluh tempat penilaian mulai dari bhāva (disposisi batin), beserta karma, sūtaka (kenajisan karena kelahiran atau kematian), dan daṣṭa-ceṣṭā (tingkah laku yang tergigit)—inilah tujuh ciri diagnosis yang diajarkan.
