Nārada’s Teaching on a Viṣṇu-Vrata for Securing a Husband
Narrative of the Apsarases
tās taṃ dṛṣṭvā vilāsinyō jaṭāmukuṭadhāriṇam | asthicarmāvaśeṣaṃ tu chatradaṇḍakapālinam || 54.6 ||
Varāha (default dialogue framework; speaker not explicit in excerpt)
The verse preserves a Purāṇic narrative style of character depiction through recognizable external markers (jaṭā, staff, skull-bowl), valuable for studying South Asian ascetic and iconographic vocabulary across manuscript traditions.
No geographic location is named in this verse fragment; it functions primarily as a descriptive scene-setting unit.
No explicit ethical injunction is stated here; the verse primarily conveys a descriptive contrast between the women’s demeanor (vilāsa) and the figure’s austere, mortuary-associated attributes (bone/skin remnants, skull-bowl), which can contextualize later moral or philosophical discussion in the surrounding passage.
