Nārada’s Teaching on a Viṣṇu-Vrata for Securing a Husband
Narrative of the Apsarases
अगस्त्य उवाच । विष्णुरेव सदाराध्यः सर्वदेवैरपि प्रभुः । तस्योपायं प्रवक्ष्यामि येनासौ वरदो भवेत् ॥ ५४.२ ॥
agastya uvāca | viṣṇur eva sadārādhyaḥ sarvadevair api prabhuḥ | tasyopāyaṃ pravakṣyāmi yenāsau varado bhavet || 54.2 ||
Agastya
Viṣṇu is the constant object of worship; learn and follow the upāya (means) that makes him ‘varada’ (boon-giving).
Steady Viṣṇu-upāsanā with proper means yields iṣṭa-siddhi/boons; neglect or misdirected worship yields instability and lesser results.
The supremacy of Viṣṇu ‘even over the gods’ aligns with the Purāṇic identification of the cosmic sustainer as the inner ruler (antaryāmin) whom all deities serve—an implicit move from polycentric ritual to a unifying principle.
Points toward ekānta-bhakti and the hierarchy where devatās are functional powers under the one Lord; devotion becomes a direct means (upāya) to grace (anugraha).
Viṣṇu is the supreme Lord; continuous worship (sadārādhya) plus correct method invites divine grace as boon-bestowal.
Adopt steady daily Viṣṇu-smaraṇa and pūjā; seek a defined sādhana (mantra, vrata, dāna, śravaṇa) rather than sporadic devotion.
Varāha Purāṇa: ensuing ‘upāya’ description promised here (next verses/section)
It exemplifies a common Purāṇic instructional frame where a named sage authoritatively introduces an upāya (practical means) for worship, reflecting the genre’s role in systematizing devotional disciplines.
No geographic location is named in this verse; it functions as a doctrinal preface to an upcoming method or practice.
The verse foregrounds disciplined, continual devotion (sadā-ārādhana) and presents worship as a structured means (upāya) toward obtaining beneficial outcomes, framed in a non-polemical, instructional manner.
