Gaurī’s Rebirth, Umā’s Austerities, Rudra’s Test, and the Himalayan Wedding
mahātapā uvāca | tasmin nivasatas tasya rudrasya parameṣṭhinaḥ | cukopa gaurī devasya pitur vairam anusmaran || 22.1 ||
Mahātapā
It exemplifies Purāṇic narrative technique: a named speaker (Mahātapā) frames a mythic episode, preserving inter-sectarian lore (Śaiva–Śākta motifs) within a broader Purāṇic compilation.
No specific geographic toponym is given in this verse; the reference is deictic (“tasmin”—‘there’), requiring surrounding verses for location identification.
The verse highlights how recollection of past hostility (vairam anusmaran) can catalyze anger (cukopa), a common Purāṇic observation about the moral psychology of resentment.
