Varāha
Outer cleanliness functions as a pedagogy for inner attentiveness—pūjā requires intentionality, respect, and boundary-keeping around sacred acts.
Before worship: wash hands/limbs, avoid using contaminated remnants, and if exposed to death-impurity or accidental touch-contamination, perform prescribed cleansing (snāna, ācamana, clean garments, re-sanctification of items) before resuming pūjā.
Addresses ritual impurity scenarios—worship with oil-smeared hands from lamp-remnants, contact with cremation-ground contexts, contaminated/touched worship—and prescribes śodhana (purificatory) procedures.
Observing śodhana restores adhikāra for pūjā and prevents doṣa; ignoring impurity rules renders worship fruitless and may accrue pāpa through disrespect to deity/rite.
Varāha Purāṇa: śauca/śodhana subsections contiguous with 218.218 (lamp, remnants, touch, cremation-ground topics)
It indexes purity/pollution concerns that overlap with Dharmaśāstra discourse, showing how Purāṇas also served as practical ritual-ethical handbooks.
No specific location is named; “śmaśāna” is a functional place-type rather than a named site.
It emphasizes carefulness in ritual contexts and the availability of purification procedures after contact with ritually sensitive substances or spaces.
