The Origin of Fire and the Liturgical Names of Agni
kiṃ ca tāsāṃ mune bhojyaṃ kā vā saṃjñā tithiś ca kā | yasyām yaṣṭās tv amī puṃsāṃ phalaṃ yacchanty anāmayam | etan me sa-rahasyaṃ tu mune tvaṃ vaktum arhasi || 18.4 ||
Pṛthivī (Inquirer, per default dialogue framework)
It exemplifies Purāṇic pedagogical method: an inquirer requests precise ritual-technical details (food-offering, designation, and tithi), reflecting the integration of narrative dialogue with calendrical and observance-oriented instruction.
No geographic location is named in this verse; the focus is on ritual classification and calendrical timing (tithi).
The verse frames practice in terms of human well-being—seeking an “unafflicted” (anāmaya) result—thus presenting ritual knowledge as oriented toward health, stability, and orderly conduct rather than coercive obligation.
