The Merit of Seeing Mathurā’s Guardian-Deity and a Catalog of Mathurā’s Sacred Geography
tasyāṃ tiṣṭhanti tīrthāni tāni vakṣyāmi tac chṛṇu || ṣaṣṭikoṭisahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭikoṭiśatāni ca ||
Varāha
It reflects a Purāṇic cataloging style in which sacred landscapes are mapped through lists and number-statements, useful for reconstructing the imagined religious geography of early medieval North India.
The passage points to the Mathurā region (explicitly named in the following verses), a major cultural and pilgrimage center in the Yamunā basin (modern Mathura, Uttar Pradesh).
The verse emphasizes attentive listening and transmission of knowledge about culturally protected places (tīrthas), implying stewardship through remembrance and documentation.
