The Sacred Greatness of Badarikāśrama
Badrinath Region
तत्राहं तोषितस्तेन अत्रिपुत्रेण माधवि। नवपञ्चककोट्यस्तु कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्॥
tatrāhaṁ toṣitas tena atriputreṇa mādhavi | navapañcakakoṭyas tu kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ||
वहाँ अत्रि पुत्र ने बहुत कठिन काम किया। उससे मैं खुश हो गया। यह काम इतना बड़ा था कि उसकी कीमत पंद्रह कोटि थी।
Varāha
Varāha addresses Bhū (Mādhavī) directly, narrating a past sacred episode and his satisfaction (toṣa) with Atri’s son.
Implicit: which sacred act/site earned Varāha’s pleasure and what is its measure of merit?
curious, attentive
Extraordinary, arduous ritual action (karma suduṣkaram) performed with devotion is praised as highly meritorious and pleasing to the Lord.
Such action accrues immense puṇya (figuratively ‘nine and five koṭis’) and draws divine favor; negligence implies loss of that merit.
Divine pleasure (toṣa/prasāda) is won by strenuous dharmic action offered in devotion, not by mere claim of status.
Undertake demanding dharmic observances (yajña, dāna, tīrtha-sevā) with sincerity, dedicating the fruit to Bhagavān.
Varāha Purāṇa: adjacent Somagiri/tīrtha narrative in 141.47–51 (site-merit progression)
It embeds genealogical memory (Atri’s lineage) into a tīrtha account, reflecting how Purāṇic texts link place, ritual achievement, and revered lineages.
The location is referenced only as “there” (tatra), continuing the Somābhiṣeka-tīrtha context; no additional identifying markers appear in this verse.
The verse highlights disciplined effort (undertaking difficult actions/rites) as a valued ideal within the text’s merit-and-place framework.
