Then who indeed is called a brāhmaṇa? Whoever, having directly realized (made immediately evident) the Self—non-dual, devoid of birth-status, qualities, and actions; free from all defects such as the six waves and the six transformations; of the nature of truth, knowledge, bliss, and infinitude; itself free of conceptual distinctions; the support of all imaginations (kalpas); abiding as the inner controller of all beings; pervading within and without like space; of the nature of unbroken bliss; immeasurable; knowable only through direct experience; shining as immediate (aparokṣa) reality, like an āmalaka fruit in the palm—being fulfilled, free from faults such as desire and attachment; endowed with tranquility and self-control; free from envy, craving, hope, delusion, and the like; with a mind untouched by hypocrisy and ego—such a one alone is the brāhmaṇa: this is the purport of śruti, smṛti, itihāsa, and purāṇa. Otherwise, brāhmaṇahood is not established at all. One should contemplate the non-dual Brahman, the Self of the nature of existence-consciousness-bliss—thus (teaches) the Upaniṣad.

Brahman/Ātman as non-dual sat-cit-ānanda; jñāna as the criterion of brāhmaṇatva; aparokṣa-anubhūti (direct realization) and sādhana-catuṣṭaya virtues (śama, dama, etc.)Mahavakya: Strongly aligned in meaning with “ahaṃ brahmāsmi” (Bṛhadāraṇyaka) and “tat tvam asi” (Chāndogya): the realized brāhmaṇa is one who directly knows the non-dual Self/Brahman beyond attributes and action.SamaChandas: Prose
