Outer meaning

Parjanya, like a father, sets a dwelling for the mighty one at Earth’s navel among the mountains. The sister Waters stream toward the cows/rays; with pressing stones they come together in the well-spread sacrifice.

Inner meaning

Parjanya (rain-cloud power) is the descending fecund force—grace that ‘fathers’ the growth of Soma in the embodied field. ‘Earth’s navel’ is the central foundation of the physical being (a stable base where the divine can be housed). ‘Among the mountains’ suggests the higher ranges of consciousness within the embodied nature (firm, elevated formations). The Waters (āpaḥ), called sisters, are the flowing currents of consciousness and emotion that support purification; they stream toward the ‘cows’—illumining rays—so that feeling-nature moves toward knowledge rather than confusion. The pressing stones (grāvan) are the powers of concentration/tapas that extract Soma. In the ‘well-spread sacrifice’ (vīta adhvara), all these forces converge so delight is born, clarified, and made fit for offering.

Universal truth

Transformation requires both descent and ascent: grace that establishes a base, flowing supportive currents, and concentrated effort that extracts the essence; when these converge, illumination and delight become stable.

Themes

Soma-ritual, cosmic cooperation, waters and light, inner formation

Other hymns
RV 9.82 (hymn context)

Significance

The seer maps the hidden ecology of realization: descent (Parjanya), foundation (earth’s navel), ascent-support (mountain ranges), flow (waters), and effort (pressing stones) all cooperating to bring Soma (Ananda) into the sacrifice.

Devata
Soma Pavamāna (with functional imagery of Parjanya and Āpaḥ)
Epithets
mahiṣa (mighty) (implied for Soma), pavamāna (contextual)
Related deities
Parjanya, Āpaḥ (Waters), Agni (adhvara’s fire, implicit)

Cosmic role

Soma is generated and purified through the cooperation of cosmic forces—rain, waters, earth, and the sacrificial pressure—then offered as delight to the gods.

Inner power

Ananda stabilized in the physical base, nourished by descending grace and purified by flowing currents and concentrated aspiration.

Where it is used

Soma pressing (grāvan) and purification context; imagery directly references pressing stones and waters.
