Sukta 9.21
ऋभुर्न रथ्यं नवं दधाता केतमादिशे । शुक्राः पवध्वमर्णसा ॥
ṛbhúr ná rathyáṃ návaṃ dádhātā ketám ā́diśe | śukrā́ḥ pavadhvam árṇasā ||
As the Ribhus (divine craftsmen) fashion a new chariot, so the hymn asks the bright Soma-streams to set a clear sign (keta) for guidance and to purify themselves in the flood (arṇas).
The “new chariot” is the renewed inner vehicle—mind-life-body harmonized for the soul’s journey. The Ribhus symbolize the subtle powers of perfection that refashion our instruments. “Keta” is the inner signal of discernment/illumination that indicates the right direction of the yoga. The “bright ones” are the purified Soma currents (luminous delight-force) that must clarify themselves by a strong outpouring (arṇas) so consciousness becomes fit, straight, and swift for the true path.
Spiritual progress requires both a re-making of the inner instruments and a clear guiding light of discernment; purification is not suppression but a luminous outflow that washes obscurity and aligns the being with truth.
renewal of the instrument, purification by the flood, revelatory sign (ketu)
In Book 9, the seer-voices are often collective or layered; the spiritual import is the vision of Soma as a conscious, purifying delight that refashions the being—here expressed through the Ribhu-symbol of perfected workmanship.
Soma is the flowing essence that supports gods and worlds—delight and clarity that makes consciousness fit for truth and power.
Ananda-force that clarifies mind and nerves, enabling right indication (keta) and a remade instrument for the soul’s movement.
Soma pressing and purification (pavamāna recitations)
ऋ॒भुर्न रथ्यं॒ नवं॒ दधा॑ता॒ केत॑मा॒दिशे॑ । शु॒क्राः प॑वध्व॒मर्ण॑सा ॥

32
4 pādas × ~8 syllables (probable)
Compact, directive, artisan-like precision; forward-driving cadence.
Creates a sense of ‘setting in order’—clarifying and aligning; supports concentration and decisive inner orientation.
Pavamāna context with R̥bhu imagery: as artisans renew forms, so Soma-streams renew and purify, setting ‘keta’ (clear sign) for guidance in the rite and inner path.
During Soma-yajña sequences while Soma is filtered and offered
Chanting alongside pressing/straining; invoking purification and right direction of the Soma-flow
Use as a mantra for inner purification before meditation—‘refashioning the chariot’ (daily renewal of the instruments) and invoking clear inner guidance (keta).
(R̥bhu) associated with √rabh/√r̥bh ‘to work skillfully, seize, fashion’ (etymology contested; RV presents them as divine craftsmen). from ‘chariot’. ‘new’ (PIE *néwos). ‘sign, banner, perception’ (often ‘light-mark’). √pū ‘purify’ → pavadhvam (2pl middle imperative). ‘flood, wave, stream’ (water-mass).
renewal (nava) as inner re-formation, keta as sign of truth-perception, crafting/forming (R̥bhu) as shaping consciousness
Purification aligns the flowing force with Ṛta; the ‘sign’ (keta) is the mark of right order in action.
Truth is approached by clarified currents; the inner sign is a satya-indication within experience.
Re-making/re-forming of instruments (Ribhu motif) as ongoing creation within the human being.
Proto-Vedāntic/Integral (Aurobindonian) reading: Ananda as a conscious power that transforms mind-life-body.
A bright current of delight-consciousness floods the inner channels, refashions the ‘vehicle,’ and sets a clear intuitive signal for the path.
Invite the ‘Ribhu’ power to refashion the inner vehicle; then feel a bright Soma-current washing the mind and setting a clear intuitive ‘sign’ for right action.
ājñā (keta as inner indication)
moderate nāḍī-śodhana or simple equal breathing while feeling a cool-bright flow on the exhale
clarified, guided, quietly luminous attention
Begin with a brief inward offering (Agni), then chant, and sit to detect the ‘keta’—a subtle, calm certainty about the next right movement; avoid mental forcing, let the flow purify.
Use Vedic tri-svara (udātta/anudātta/svarita) as per śākhā; without full accent notation here, chant with careful neutrality and avoid classical svara gamakas.
Keep each pada clear; lightly emphasize udātta-bearing syllables if using a trained Vedic accent tradition; otherwise maintain even tone with gentle lift on semantic pivots (ketam, śukrāḥ, pavadhvam).
ṛ in ṛbhuḥ is vocalic ‘r’ (not ri), ṣ/ś: śukrāḥ with palatal ś, ṇ in arṇasā is retroflex; keep ‘ar-ṇa-sā’ distinct, dh in dadhāta is aspirated (soft breath after d)
bright, steady, flowing; avoid harshness—aim for ‘filtered clarity’
