Vasiṣṭha
Agni (as Hotṛ and upward flame)

This short Vasiṣṭha hymn praises Agni as the upward-rising flame and as Hotṛ, the priest who carries the offering on the path of ṛta (truth-order) to the gods. It depicts the gods gathering at the common ritual seat and asks Agni to perform the desired rite, culminating in a benediction for inspired hymn-power (arka) and lasting well-being (svasti).

Mantra 1
ऊर्ध्वो अग्निः सुमतिं वस्वो अश्रेत्प्रतीची जूर्णिर्देवतातिमेति । भेजाते अद्री रथ्येव पन्थामृतं होता न इषितो यजाति ॥
अग्नि ऊपर उठा है और अच्छे विचार की तरफ झुका है। वो आग वापस देवता की सभा की तरफ जा रही है। जैसे दो पत्थर मिल के रथ की राह लेते हैं, वैसे ही होता, जो यज्ञ करता है, वो सच्चाई और अमृत के लिए हमारे लिए यज्ञ करता है।

प्र वावृजे सुप्रया बर्हिरेषामा विश्पतीव बीरिट इयाते । विशामक्तोरुषसः पूर्वहूतौ वायुः पूषा स्वस्तये नियुत्वान् ॥
यज्ञ के लिए कुश का आसन साफ बिछा दिया है। जैसे दो बड़े लोग आते हैं, वैसे ही यह देवता पक्की जगह पर आते हैं। रात और सुबह के मिलने के वक्त, सबसे पहले वायु और पूषन आते हैं। यह हमारे भले के लिए जुड़ के आते हैं।

ज्मया अत्र वसवो रन्त देवा उरावन्तरिक्षे मर्जयन्त शुभ्राः । अर्वाक्पथ उरुज्रयः कृणुध्वं श्रोता दूतस्य जग्मुषो नो अस्य ॥
यहाँ धरती पर वसु देवता खुश हों। आसमान में चमक के वो साफ करें। हमें सही रास्ता बना दो, जो आसानी से नीचे आए। हमारे पास से जो दूत आया है, उसकी बात सुनो।

ते हि यज्ञेषु यज्ञियास ऊमाः सधस्थं विश्वे अभि सन्ति देवाः । ताँ अध्वर उशतो यक्ष्यग्ने श्रुष्टी भगं नासत्या पुरंधिम् ॥
यज्ञ के टाइम सब देवता वहीं इकट्ठे हो जाते हैं। वो सब हाज़िर रहते हैं और बड़ी चाहत से आते हैं। अग्नि, तू यह पूजा करो और इन सब को बुलाओ। भग, नासत्य और पुरंधि, इन तीनों को प्रसाद पहुँचा दे।

आग्ने गिरो दिव आ पृथिव्या मित्रं वह वरुणमिन्द्रमग्निम् । आर्यमणमदितिं विष्णुमेषां सरस्वती मरुतो मादयन्ताम् ॥
अग्नि, ऊपर आसमान से और नीचे धरती से सब अच्छे शब्द ले आ। मित्र, वरुण, इंद्र और अग्नि, इन सब को यहाँ बुला। अर्यमन, अदिति और विष्णु को भी साथ लाओ। सरस्वती और मरुत देवता खुश हो जाएँ और हमारी पूजा को बढ़ा दें।

ररे हव्यं मतिभिर्यज्ञियानां नक्षत्कामं मर्त्यानामसिन्वन् । धाता रयिमविदस्यं सदासां सक्षीमहि युज्येभिर्नु देवैः ॥
भगवान ने हमारी सोच के हिसाब से यह ऑफरिंग दे दिया है। इंसानों की ख्वाहिश पूरी कर दी है, कोई कमी नहीं छोड़ी। धात्र हमारे लिए ऐसा धन दे जो कभी खत्म न हो। हम देवताओं के साथ मिलकर चल पाएँ।

नू रोदसी अभिष्टुते वसिष्ठैॠतावानो वरुणो मित्रो अग्निः । यच्छन्तु चन्द्रा उपमं नो अर्कं यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
जब वसिष्ठ ऋषि आसमान और धरती को पुकारते हैं, तब वरुण, मित्र और अग्नि सबसे पहले हाज़िर हो जाते हैं। यह चमकता हुआ शक्तियाँ हमें सबसे अच्छा ज्योति दे दें। हे देवता, तुम हमेशा हमें सुरक्षित रखो और अच्छा रखो।
