Sukta 6.51
यूयं हि ष्ठा सुदानव इन्द्रज्येष्ठा अभिद्यवः । कर्ता नो अध्वन्ना सुगं गोपा अमा ॥
yūyáṃ hí ṣṭhā su-dānava índra-jyeṣṭhā abhi-dyávaḥ | kártā no ádhvann ā́ su-gáṃ gopā́ amā́ ||
You are indeed givers of good gifts, with Indra as the foremost, powers that press toward the luminous. Make for us on the journey a good path—guardians here with us.
The All-Gods, led by Indra, are invoked as sudānavaḥ—beneficent powers that truly give (strength, clarity, joy). abhidyavaḥ indicates those who move toward the light/sky: inner forces oriented upward, not toward obscurity. The central request is practical yoga: make the adhvan (the path of life and inner progress) suga—clear and auspicious. And be gopāḥ amā—guardians ‘here, in our immediate being’: not remote divinity, but present protection of the rays of knowledge in daily action.
Spiritual life is a journey; it succeeds when our energies are oriented toward light and when higher guidance actively protects and clears the path in everyday circumstances.
safe-journey, indra-led-powers, guardianship, upward-aspiration
Bharadvāja’s closing prayers often turn to ‘path-making’ (sugam) and guardianship—spirituality tested in the journey of life.
The seer’s integral emphasis: divine gifts are for the road of transformation; protection must be present ‘amā’—in the lived moment.
Collective powers administering increase, protection, and right movement toward light in the worlds.
A coordinated uplift of all faculties toward illumination, with practical guardianship over knowledge and direction.
Viśvedevas invocation for safe passage and protection; closing benediction

4 x ~8 syllables
Compact and encouraging; a marching rhythm suited to ‘journey’ imagery.
Builds confidence and forward motion; instills a sense of companionship and protection.
Journey-protection and right-path invocation; can be used as a svasti formula in departures and transitions within ritual sequences.
Before departures, transitions, or concluding offerings seeking safe journey and guardianship
Recitation with offering and a mental ‘setting out’ on the adhvan
A short travel/transition mantra; also before starting a new project to ask for a clear path and protection of clarity.
dā́nu/dānava relates to giving (√dā 'give'); su-dānava intensifies beneficence. abhi-dyú (toward dyu 'sky/light') marks aspiration upward. adhván is both literal road and inner course. gopā again supports the symbolic 'guardians of light-rays' reading.
aspiration upward (abhi-dyu), sugam as right movement in ṛta, guardianship of light (go)
sugam adhvan is the human alignment to ṛta as a navigable path in action.
Guardianship (gopāḥ) protects the rays of truth-knowledge from distortion.
Ascent toward light as evolutionary movement; the gods as facilitators of that ascent.
Vedic ascent-psychology: orientation to dyu (light) as the criterion for progress.
Skyward orientation = aspiration; path = sequence of inner steps; guardians = protective discernment maintaining knowledge-light.
Orient all parts toward light (abhi-dyavaḥ); ask for a clear next step (sugam adhvan) and protection of insight (gopāḥ).
Ājñā (direction/inner guidance) supported by Anāhata (trust/companionship).
Walking meditation: inhale ‘yūyaṃ hi stha’, exhale ‘kartā no adhvann ā sugaṃ’; synchronize with steps.
Forward-moving confidence with calm guardianship
Before a decision, chant once, then silently ask: ‘What is the suga step?’ Wait for a simple, light-bearing action that reduces inner crookedness.
Keep the short-meter melody; mark udatta on índra and key compounds (indra-jyeṣṭhāḥ). Maintain low baseline on anudatta syllables; let svarita fall naturally.
Emphasize the request phrase: kartā no adhvann ā sugaṃ. Slight pause before gopā amā to land the sense of ‘here with us’.
yūyaṃ: long ū; nasal ṃ at end, jyeṣṭhāḥ: pronounce jyeṣṭh with retroflex ṣṭh, abhidyavaḥ: keep ‘dya’ as palatal cluster; not ‘di-ya’ separated, adhvann: double n with slight hold (sandhi)
Encouraging, steady, companionable; medium pitch.
